National Job Search Sites

With more than 1000 job search sites online, there’s something for everyone - even if your idea of high-technology is a fax machine. In fact, stereotypical "techies" are no longer the most likely group to search for jobs online. A 1999 survey by CareerMosaic.com shows that more managers and sales professionals are looking for jobs online than any other group surveyed.

Of the 1000+ sites out there, a dozen stand out as the best in terms of job listings or other services, such as relocation data or salary updates. We’ve also included "metasearch" sites that may or may not list their own jobs, but go out and search other sites.

Job Search Sites:

www.ajb.org The real "monster" of job search boards, it lists nearly 1.5 million jobs across the country. Created and maintained by the U.S. Department of Labor, AJB also includes Career InfoNet, which details highest-paying jobs, jobs with most openings, and the fastest-growing occupations to help you decide which career is best.

www.monster.com At the top of the commercial job search sites with about 500,000 jobs, monster.com offers exceptionally effective breakdowns to identify the jobs most likely to meet your needs. Sign up for a "search agent" and receive emails when new jobs are posted. (Also used as the basis for AOL’s job search function.)

www.jobsonline.com Billed as the fastest-growing job search site on the web with about 200,000 jobs, this site includes a number of work-at-home and computer-based jobs.

www.careerpath.com Powered by newspapers - where classified ads have long been a mainstay of any successful job search - this site includes more than 300,000 jobs. Registered users can save refined searches to make checking in easy.

www.hotjobs.com An easy-to-use site that breaks jobs down into "channels" where searches can be centered, it also includes salary surveys and relocation information.

www.nationsjob.com/florida.comThe Florida Chamber's job search link for employment opportunities in the state's private sector. This site includes NationJob's Personal Job Scout, P.J. Scout. Sign up for P.J. Scout and receive e-mails with detailed job descriptions including "how to apply" information - free and confidential service now serving over 500,000 subscribers.

careerjournal.com A free service of The Wall Street Journal, this site features jobs from major national and international corporations broken down into geographic regions. Also includes career-oriented business news, job search tips and career columnists.

careerhighway A limited number of job descriptions can make searching for some jobs more difficult. Does offer weekly email updates on job opportunities.

hotjobs.com Extensive job listings with "employer search" feature that allows jobseekers to select from thousands of potential employers.

careershop.com Targeted specifically for IT and healthcare professionals, it also includes information on online training opportunities.

www.careermosiac.com Recently merged with headhunter.net to provide more comprehensive job listings.

www.jobs.com Also includes an online university where classes ranging from MS Windows to web research and communications strategies.

Other sites:

www.salary.com Easy-to-use reports on average salaries in thousands of job categories. Also includes links to government reports on occupational outlooks, professional organizations and trade publications in the specific industry you’re researching.

www.careerperfect.com Along with other services, this site compares costs of living in various cities around the U.S. and reports what you’d need to make in Florida to maintain the standard of living you have in another location.

www.vault.com Billed as the "insider’s career network," it includes industry-specific jobs as well as links to publications and career-oriented news.

Metasearch Sites:

www.hoovers.com Searches over 150 career sites and then provides a fully linked list that allows you to easily submit Internet resumes to companies. Other features allow users to research corporations prior to a job interview.

www.worktree.com A metasearch site which also includes list of links to other sites like job searches, libraries and newspapers.

www.JobAnywhere.com Quickly sorts through 20 major job web sites, hundreds of job newsgroups and classified ads from 96 newspapers nationwide.
