Older Worker Demonstration Grant

Eligibility: The preferred applicant for this solicitation is a legal entity that represents the local workforce investment system as follows: • A Local Workforce Investment Board (LWIB), as established under Section 117 of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) (Pub. L. 105–220), that has been incorporated; or • In areas where the LWIB is not incorporated, the legal entity that serves as the fiscal agent for the local workforce investment area. Other applicants for this solicitation may include: • A non-LWIB entity with the concurrence from the LWIB (this would require evidence of the board’s support and involvement in the project along with a letter of concurrence). • All other applicants without a letter of concurrence from the LWIB (such applicants must demonstrate how the proposed activities will be connected to the region’s talent and economic development strategies, including improvement of services to older workers through the LWIB).
Description: The grants are intended to address the workforce challenges facing older individuals by developing models for talent development in regional economies that recognize older workers as a valuable labor pool and include employment and training strategies to retain and/or connect older workers to jobs in high growth, high demand industries critical to the regional economy. Grants awarded under the Older Worker Demonstration should focus on providing training and related services for individuals age 55 and older that result in employment and advancement opportunities in high growth industries and economic sectors. The proposed strategies must take place in the context of regional talent development efforts designed to contribute to a strong regional economy, and must be developed and implemented by a strategic regional partnership. The Purpose Prize
Funding Source: Civic Ventures
Funding Award: 5 awards of $100,000 each to people over 60 who are working to address society's biggest challenges.
Eligibility: To be eligible for the prize, the nominee must be at least 60 years old (by the deadline of March 5, 2009) and be a legal resident of the United States (including U.S. territories). Nominees should have initiated important innovations as part of an encore career, and should be currently working in a leadership capacity in an organization or institution (public, private, nonprofit, or for-profit) to address a major social problem in the U.S. or abroad. Nominees should have demonstrated recent creativity and leadership with the promise of more to come. Elected officials are not eligible for the prize. Individuals working in faith-based service organizations that have a broader social mission are eligible and encouraged to apply, but the purpose of their project cannot be strictly religious or sectarian.

Description: An inspiring new group of role models for "engaged retirement" is emerging. Unwilling to stuff envelopes or go off quietly to the sidelines, these change-makers are taking matters into their own hands and fashioning a new vision of the second half of life, one in which the expertise and talent of a lifetime is refocused on finding solutions to challenges in our communities, our country, and the world. They are living proof that aging does not equal stagnation and decline, that later life is a time of innovation, productivity, and creativity as rich as the younger years. The Purpose Prize honors those innovations.

2009 Accessible America Competition

Funding Amount: Communities compete for a $25,000 cash prize and the distinction of being identified as one of the best places in the U.S. for people with disabilities to live, learn, work and play.

Description: Its purpose is to recognize and promote replication of exemplary practices that communities use to facilitate the comprehensive involvement of citizens with disabilities in community life.

2009 Verizon Tech Savvy Awards
Funding Source: Presented by the National Center for Family Literacy
Funding Award: One national award of $25,000 and four regional awards of $5,000 will be given to organizations that have developed and delivered exemplary programs in information communications technology literacy for parents and children. The awards will be presented at the 2009 National Conference on Family Literacy in Orlando, Florida.
Eligibility: 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, including community-based nonprofits, libraries and schools may apply. Religious or sectarian organizations may apply only if the program(s) offered serve a broad cross-section of the community.
Description: The Verizon Tech Savvy Awards recognize outstanding educational programs that demystify technology for parents so that they may better support their child’s academic and social growth in an increasingly complex 21st century. Established in 2007 by the Verizon Foundation, the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL), and Former First Lady of Iowa Christie Vilsack, the Verizon Tech Savvy Awards are the first national awards given to intergenerational digital learning programs. Goals of the Verizon Tech Savvy Awards are:To provide an incentive for grassroots, community-based nonprofit organizations, libraries and schools to include information communications technology literacy for parents as a component to enhance existing literacy programming; to promote and support programming that empowers parents and subsequently their children to utilize technology-based resources and tools for literacy and language learning; to encourage intergenerational applications of technology that improve the literacy and life skills of both parents and children; to recognize innovative programming that prepares families for success in the 21st century through the use of digital media and to help parents be active participants in all facets of their children’s education. Information communications technology (ICT) literacy programs should demonstrate innovative and creative use of digital learning, including but not limited to computers and the Internet, software applications, mobile learning, gaming devices, and video, in order to: Increase parents’ understanding and use of technology to support their children’s growth, empower parents to use technology to access, analyze, manage, integrate, evaluate and communicate information, expose parents to the educational opportunities offered through digital learning, encourage and support parents to be actively involved in and to advocate for their child’s education, bridge the gap for parents between theoretical technology use and real-life applications, especially in ways that promote 21st century learning skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem solving, collaborative learning, and global awareness, provide a setting for facilitated interactions using new media for parents and children, provide learning activities that are transferable to home and/or the community to encourage technology use outside the program setting. ICT programs should demonstrate that they are sustainable, scalable and measurable.
