State Grants:
FY 2008 Drug-Free Communities Grants (DFC)

Funding Source: The Florida Office of Drug Control (funded through the
No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 Title IV, Part A, Subpart 1: Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA)
Funding Amount: The maximum DFC award will be $65,000.
Eligibility: nonprofit community organizations, parent groups, anti-drug coalitions, juvenile and probate courts, faith-based organizations and other public
and private nonprofit entities with a 501(c)(3) status. Grantees will also be required to develop community wide planning specifically with mental health, schools, and parents.
Description: The purpose of this grant program is to solicit proposals from
communities for evidence-based programs and activities that (1) prevent youth drug use and violence; (2) involve parents and communities; and (3) are coordinated with related state, school and community efforts and resources to foster a safe and drug-free learning environment that promotes student academic achievement.

OJJDP FY 2008 Gang Prevention Coordination Assistance Program

Funding Source: The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, U.S. Department of Justice
Funding Amount: Award ceiling: $200,000
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include: public agencies (including state agencies, units of local government, public universities and colleges, and tribal governments) and private organizations (including faith and community-based organizations).
Description: For localities to enhance coordination of federal, state, and local resources in support of community partnerships implementing two or more of the following anti-gang strategies: primary prevention, secondary prevention, gang intervention, and gang enforcement. The purpose of the Gang Prevention Coordination Assistance program is to support and enhance the coordination of existing community-based gang prevention and intervention programs and strategies that are closely aligned with local law enforcement efforts. Community-based gang prevention and intervention often involve multiple organizations and programs working in partnership to deliver complementary services to the same or similar target populations. Effective coordination can help identify existing programs and resources and maximize their impact through information sharing, mutual referrals, joint
case management, and collective action.

OJJDP FY 2008 National Mentoring Programs

Funding Source: The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
Funding Amount: This program will fund multiple awards for a period of up to 3 years. This program will not support indirect costs for management and administrative expenses in excess of 10%. All awards are subject to the availability of appropriated funds and any modifications or additional requirements that may be imposed by law.
Eligibility: Applicants are limited to national organizations, including community and faith-based nonprofit organizations
Description: This solicitation invites applicants to propose the implementation of ready initiatives that will assist in the development and maturity of community programs to provide mentoring services to populations that are underserved due to locations, shortage of mentors, special physical or mental challenges of the targeted population, or other such situations identified by the community in need of mentoring services. The purpose of this program is to support organizations that have mentoring programs ready for implementation that will strengthen and expand existing mentoring activities. OJJDP is especially interested in programs that seek to increase participation of mentors by underrepresented groups (e.g., Hispanic and African-American adult males), programs that target children of single-parent families, and organizations that focus on making truancy prevention a priority in improving school attendance. This initiative also seeks to promote collaboration among national youth service organizations that support mentoring activities and community organizations committed to supporting mentoring service

OJJDP FY 2008 Strengthening Youth Mentoring through Community Partnerships

Funding Amount: $250,000-$500,000 for three years
Eligibility: Units of county, city or township governments, state governments, special district governments, native American tribal governments, Native American tribal governments (Federally recognized),nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education
Description: This solicitation invites applicants to propose initiatives that will increase local communities’ capacity to develop and implement mentoring programs and provide mentoring services, particularly to populations of at-risk youth who are underserved due to location, shortage of mentors, special physical or mental challenges, or other situations identified by the community in need of mentoring services.

Math Moves U Hero Awards Honoring Educators

Funding Source: Raytheon Company
Funding Award: The Math Moves U program awards $1 million annually to students, teachers, and schools in the form of scholarships, grants, and awards. Based on a nomination process, math teachers and volunteers who work with students are eligible to receive a $2,500 Math Hero award, while their schools or an approved math-related nonprofit organization of their choice receive a $2,500 matching grant.
Eligibility: The annual awards reward and celebrate teachers and tutors for promoting math achievement to students in a fun and challenging learning environment Parents, students, or other teachers are invited to nominate their Math Hero. Nominees must:
• Be full-time teachers who are currently employed and teaching a mathematics curriculum at a middle school or high school in the United States OR volunteers working with an approved math-related nonprofit organization (i.e. MATHCOUNTS®).
Description: Raytheon's MathMovesU program is an innovative initiative designed to engage middle school students in math by illustrating the connection between math, their passions and interests and "cool" careers.

Alan Shepard Technology In Education Award

Funding Source: The Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) in partnership with the Space Foundation and NASA
Funding Award:The winner will receive a commemorative trophy with his or her name engraved and a monetary award of $500. In addition, the Award winner's name will be placed on a plaque honoring past recipients that is housed in the Center for Space Education at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Eligibility: Open to all K-12 school or district level educators from across the nation. The Award will be presented by AMF, the Space Foundation and NASA at the 25th National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colorado (The 25th National Space Symposium takes place March 30 - April 2, 2009). The winner will be flown to Colorado Springs, where hotel accommodations will be provided. The winner will receive a commemorative trophy with his or her name engraved and a monetary award of $500. In addition, the Award winner's name will be placed on a plaque honoring past recipients that is housed in the Center for Space Education at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The candidate must be nominated by the school's principal. An associate superintendent or superintendent must nominate all district level personnel.
Description: In a continuing effort to recognize outstanding contributions by K-12 educators and District level personnel in the field of Educational Technology. The Award recognizes outstanding contributions made by technology personnel or classroom teachers to technology education. Programs which focus on aerospace and/or aeronautics will be given priority to other programs. Applicants must demonstrate how their programs ultimately benefit the students in a school or district

Description: The Foundation is committed to investing in health-related organizations and cultural programs that impact a diverse population of youth.
