Description: Grantees provide an array of supports and services to enable individuals and families with low incomes to become economically self-sufficient for the long-term. A primary feature of each AFI project is that project participants are given access to special matched savings accounts called Individual Development Accounts (IDA), in which participants save earned income for the purchase of a home, for business capitalization, or to attend higher education or training. Applications will be screened and evaluated as indicated in this announcement. Unsuccessful applicants may submit new applications in any succeeding application cycle. This is a standing announcement. This announcement supersedes the standing announcement published in the Federal Register on February 2, 2005. It will be effective until cancelled or changed by the Director of OCS. Application due dates are January 15 and March 25 in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Occupational Safety and Health Susan Harwood Training Grant, FY 2008

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations, including community-based and faith-based organizations, that are not an agency of a State or local government are eligible to apply. Additionally, State or local government supported institutions of higher education are eligible to apply in accordance with 29 CFR part 95. Eligible organizations can apply independently for funding or in partnership with other eligible organizations, but in such a case, a lead organization must be identified. Sub-grants are not authorized. Subcontracts, if any, must be awarded in accordance with 29 CFR 95.40-48, including OMB circulars requiring free and open competition for procurement transactions
Description: The Susan Harwood Training Grant Program provides funds for programs to train employees and employers to recognize, avoid, and prevent safety and health hazards in their workplaces. The program emphasizes four areas: 1) Educating employees and employers in small businesses. For purposes of this grant program, a small business is one with 250 or fewer employees; 2) Training employees and employers about new OSHA standards; 3) Training at-risk employee and employer populations; and 4) Training employees and employers about high risk activities or hazards identified by OSHA through the Department of Labor’s Strategic Plan, or as part of an OSHA special emphasis program. Under this solicitation for grant applications, OSHA will accept applications for the Targeted Topic training grant category. Organizations funded for Targeted Topic training category grants are expected to develop and provide occupational safety and health training and/or educational programs addressing one of the topics selected by OSHA, recruit employees and employers for the training, and conduct and evaluate the training. Grantees are also expected to conduct follow-up evaluations with individuals trained by their program to determine what, if any, changes were made to reduce hazards in their workplaces as a result of the training. If your organization plans to train employees or employers in any of the 26 states operating OSHA-approved State Plans, State OSHA requirements for that state must be included in the training. Eighteen different training topics were selected for this grant announcement. OSHA may award grants for some or all of the listed Targeted Topic training topics. Applicants wishing to address more than one of the announced grant topics must submit a separate grant application for each topic.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service FY 2009

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to nonprofit organizations, state service commissions, volunteer centers, institutions of higher education, national or regional education agencies, educational institutions, and faith-based institutions. Only applicants capable of carrying out multi-state, national focused (10 or more states), or comprehensive regional initiatives are eligible for funding.
Description: The Corporation for National and Community Service (the Corporation) provides grants to organizations to plan and carry out projects that bring Americans together to serve in their communities in observation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Subject to availability of appropriations, a total of approximately $500,000 will be awarded to support 2009 King Day activities, ranging in amounts from approximately $50,000 to $300,000, to support the first year of these grants. These funds are subject to the availability of FY 2009 appropriations under the authority of section 198(s) of the National and Community Service Act of 1990 (42USC12653(9)), authorizing the Corporation to make grants to share the cost of planning and carrying out service opportunities in conjunction with the federal legal holiday honoring the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. Grantees will be eligible for continuation funding in the second and third years contingent upon the availability of appropriations, compliance with requirements, and satisfactory performance. The purpose of these grants is to mobilize more Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday as a day of service in communities, to encourage those who serve on this holiday to make a long-term commitment to community service, and to bring people together to focus on service to others. The Corporation is interested in multi-state, national (10 or more states) or comprehensive regional initiatives (multi-state regions – for example, the Corporation’s clusters). Activities must include projects that improve the lives of disadvantaged youth and engage them in providing service to others. Grantees must competitively subgrant a portion of the federal funds to eligible local organizations, and may also directly support local projects, to plan and carry out direct service activities on the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekends.

Brownfields Training, Research and Technical Assistance Grants

Funding Amount: The total estimated funding available under this competitive opportunity is approximately $10,000,000, subject to the availability of funds and quality of proposals received. EPA anticipates award of 5-10 cooperative agreements. The maximum amount of funding available per applicant shall not exceed $1,500,000. Applicants may propose performance periods of up to 5 years, with the maximum annual funding not to exceed $300,000. Cooperative agreements awarded under this competition may be funded incrementally on an annual basis. Additional funds may be added in each subsequent year of the agreement, subject to satisfactory performance and the availability of funds.
Eligibility: Entities eligible to receive an assistance agreement through this solicitation include a general purpose local unit of government; a land clearance authority or other quasi-governmental entity that operates under the supervision and control of, or as an agent of, a general purpose unit of government; a governmental entity created by a state legislature; a regional council or group of general purpose units of local government; a redevelopment agency that is chartered or otherwise sanctioned by a state; a state; an Indian tribe (other than in Alaska), or an Alaskan Native Regional Corporation and an Alaska Native Village Corporation as those terms are defined in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (43 U.S.C. 1601 and following); and the Metlakatla Indian Community. EPA welcomes and encourages applications from coalitions of such entities, but a single eligible entity must be identified as the legal recipient. Intertribal consortia, except consortia comprised of ineligible Alaskan tribes, are eligible to apply as well. Description: This notice announces the availability of funds and solicits applications from eligible entities and non-profit organizations to provide training, research, and technical assistance to communities facing brownfields cleanup and revitalization challenges. Staples Foundation for Learning Grants

Funding Amount: The requested amount of each grant can be up to $25,000. Most grants awarded by the foundation are in the $5,000 to $25,000 range.
Eligibility: To be eligible for consideration, the applicant organizations must have tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and align with the Staples Foundation for Learning's mission and focus on job skills and education.
Description: The foundation contributes funds to national and local charities that provide educational opportunities and job skills for all people, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth.

2008 Awards of Excellence for Affordable Housing Built Responsibly

Funding Amount: There are two award categories, homeownership and rental. Within each category five grants will be awarded: $75,000 to the winning project, $25,000 to the second most competitive project and three (3) Honorable Mention grants of $2500 each
Eligibility: Projects eligible for award consideration must be developed by a 501(c)(3) organization and completed and placed in service between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007. Homeownership projects must contain at least five (5) units that were sold to families earning 80 percent or less of area median income. Rental projects must contain at least 20 units, with at least 80 percent of the units occupied by families earning 80 percent or less of area median income. Group home and transitional housing projects are not eligible for award consideration. There are no limitations as to the type of ownership structure (i.e. direct-purchase home ownership, cooperative, mutual housing, condominium, lease-purchase, land trust, etc.) or physical structure (i.e. single-family detached, townhouse, mixed-use, etc.).
Description: The grants are to be used at the discretion of the nonprofit to further the goal of producing affordable, efficient and healthy housing for low- to moderate-income families. The Home Depot Foundation's Awards program seeks to identify, recognize and showcase the outstanding and innovative work of nonprofit housing development corporations engaged in green building/healthy home construction and rehabilitation. The Foundation’s interest is to share with local, state and national stakeholders the exemplary accomplishments of the nonprofit sector in combining affordable housing construction with the guiding principles of green home building in order that low and moderate-income families have access to quality housing they can afford to own, operate and maintain.
