Description: The Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy. EDA is soliciting applications for funding the following projects: (1) Information dissemination to practitioners serving economically distressed areas; and (2) Research addressing the area of business incubators. Through its National Technical Assistance, Training, Research and Evaluation program (NTA Program), EDA works towards fulfilling its mission by funding research and technical assistance projects to promote competitiveness and innovation in distressed rural and urban regions throughout the United States and its territories. By working in conjunction with its research partners, EDA will help States, local governments and community-based organizations to achieve their highest economic potential.

FY 2007 Fire Prevention and Safety Grant Program

Eligibility: Eligible applicants for the Fire Prevention and Safety Activity include fire departments, and national, regional, state, local, or community organizations recognized for their experience and expertise in fire prevention and safety programs and activities. These include private and public nonprofit organizations. Eligible applicants for the Firefighter Safety Research and Development Activity include national, regional, state, local, or community organizations, such as academic, public health, occupational health, and injury prevention institutions, particularly those recognized for experience and expertise in firefighter safety research and development programs or whose applications demonstrate the potential to improve firefighter safety. Private and public nonprofit organizations and non-Federal and non-governmental organizations are also eligible to apply for funding. Fire departments are not eligible to apply for funding under this activity.
Description: The purpose of the Fire Prevention and Safety Grants is to fund fire prevention activities and to research and develop improvements to firefighter safety. Fire prevention grants are designed to reach high-risk target groups and mitigate incidences of deaths and injuries caused by fire and related hazards. Fire Prevention and Safety grants are separated into two “activities”. The projects that can be funded are listed below:(1) Fire Prevention and Safety: Applicants can apply for up to three projects. Public education campaigns, Smoke Alarms, Sprinkler Awareness, Code Enforcement/Awareness, Firefighter Safety, Training, Wildfire Prevention /Awareness, Arson Prevention/Awareness, Risk Assessment, General Prevention/Awareness. Applicants requesting Risk Assessments are precluded for applying for additional projects. Fire departments are subject to the same cost-share requirements as under the AFG Grants. (2) Firefighter Safety Research and Development: Applicants can apply for a grant with up to a three year period of performance, but limited to $1 million per application. For multi-year projects, they can divide the $1 million over period of performance however they deem necessary. Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Competitive Grants Program

Description: The Outreach and Assistance for Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Competitive Grants Program (OASDFR) provides funds to organizations to conduct outreach and technical assistance to encourage and assist socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers to own and operate farms and ranches and to participate in agricultural programs. The OASDFR will support a wide range of outreach and assistance activities in farm management, financial management, marketing, application and bidding procedures, and other areas. The primary purpose of the OASDFR is to deliver outreach and technical assistance, to assure opportunities for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers to successfully acquire, own, operate, and retain farms and ranches; and assure equitable participation in the full range of USDA programs.

Family to Family Health Care Information and Education Centers for Families of Children with Special Health Care Needs

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include any public or private entity in states that do not already have a center.
Description: The purpose of this initiative for "Family To Family Health Care Information and Education Centers for Families of Children with Special Health Care Needs" (F2F HICs) is to address the President's New Freedom Initiative to reduce barriers to community living for people with disabilities and to address families' lack of access to the services, advocacy and assistance they need as mandated in The Family Opportunity Act of 2005. This initiative ultimately will assist families so that: "Families of children with special health care needs will partner in decision-making at all levels". Grants will fund state-wide, family-run centers providing information, education, technical assistance and peer support to families of CYSHCN. They will be responsible for developing partnerships with those organizations serving these children and their families and monitor the progress of programs with responsibility for payment and direct services of this population through a statewide data collection system. Specifically, Congress has required that these centers will: 1) Assist families of CSHCN make informed choices about health care in order to promote good treatment decisions, cost effectiveness and improved health outcomes; 2) Provide information regarding the health care needs of and resources available for CSHCN; 3) Identify successful health delivery models; 4) Develop with representatives of health care providers, managed care organization, health car purchasers, and appropriate State agencies, a model for collaboration between families of CSHCN and health professionals; 5) Provide training and guidance regarding the care of CSHCN; 6) Conduct outreach activities to families, health professionals, schools and other appropriate entities; and 7) Be staffed by such families who have expertise in Federal and State public and private health care systems and health providers. Core values across all MCHB programs include family-centered care, family/professional partnerships and cultural and linguistic competence. These MUST be adequately integrated through our project policies and activities. MCHB will also require additional data and technical assistance. Review criteria for all of these issues will be described in the guidance. Although a Letter/Email of Intent is not required, it is to all applicants' advantage to send one so that MCHB can send notification of technical assistance calls.

Healthy Start Initiative-Eliminating Racial/Ethnic Disparities

Eligibility: Any public or private entity, including an Indian tribe or tribal organization (as defined at 25 U.S.C. 450b) is eligible to apply. Funding would be made available to community-based (and faith-based) projects which have: 1) significant disparities in perinatal indicators which contribute to high infant mortality rates, among one or more subpopulations; 2) an existing active consortia of stakeholders which have underway a perinatal disparity reduction initiative or a plan to establish one; and, 3) a feasible plan to reduce barriers, improve the local perinatal system of care, and work towards eliminating existing disparities in perinatal health. These sites must have or plan to implement/adapt Healthy Start strategies of consortium, case management, and outreach services in a culturally and linguistically sensitive manner. In addition, they must submit documentation of collaboration with the State Title V Agency. Applicants must demonstrate existing/planned collaborations with other key State and local services and resources systems. Such key State and local resources include Title X, Title XIX, Title XXI, WIC, Enterprise Communities/Empowerment Zones, federally funded Community and Migrant Health Centers, federally funded Health Care for the Homeless projects, and Indian/Tribal Health Services.
Description: Under this program, grants will be awarded to address significant disparities in perinatal health indicators. Eliminating disparities in Perinatal Health focuses on disparities in Hispanics, American Indians, African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Asian Pacific Islanders, Immigrant Populations or differences occurring by education, income, disability, or living in rural, isolated areas by enhancing a community's service system. Communities must provide a scope of project services that will cover pregnancy and interconceptional phases for women and infants residing in the proposed project area. Services are to be given to both mother and infant for two years following delivery to promote longer interconceptional periods and prevent relapses of unhealthy risk behaviors.

Applicants must be current U.S. high school student, or have graduated from high school in spring 2007.
Description: The awards honor high school students in the United States who have organized and led a project that has impacted people in poor countries, or raised awareness about global poverty in their own communities. The awards celebrate young people who have shown great leadership in areas such as preventing disease, alleviating hunger, protecting the environment, promoting human rights, and improving access to clean drinking water, healthcare, or education. Projects may involve organizing advocacy campaigns, raising funds, volunteering, or using media and technology to involve others in the fight against global poverty.

Women Career Development Grants 2008-09

Funding Amount: Awards from $2000 to $12,000
Eligibility: Career Development Grants support women who hold a bachelor's degree and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to AAUW members, women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields.
Description: Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor's degree, including a master's degree, second bachelor's degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two- or four-year college or university, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Funds are not available for doctoral-level work.
