Assistance to High Energy Cost Rural Communities Grants

Eligibility: Eligible applicants include for-profit and non-profit businesses,
cooperatives and associations, States, political subdivisions of States, and other entities organized under the laws of States, Indian tribes, tribal entities, and individuals. Eligible applicants also include entities located in U.S. Territories and other areas authorized by law to participate in the Agency's programs or programs under the RE Act.
Description: The purpose of this grant program is to provide financial assistance for a broad range of energy facilities, equipment and related activities to offset the impacts of extremely high residential energy costs on eligible communities. Grant funds may be used to purchase, construct, extend, repair, upgrade and otherwise improve energy generation, transmission, or distribution facilities serving eligible communities. Eligible facilities include on-grid and off-grid renewable energy systems and implementation of cost-effective demand side management and energy conservation programs that benefit eligible communities. Grant funds may not be used to pay utility bills or to purchase fuel. Grant projects under this program must provide community benefits and not be for the sole benefit of an individual applicant, household, or business.

Head Start University Partnership Research Grants: Strategies for Developing Teacher Effectiveness

Funding Amount: Expected Number of Awards: 10; Award amounts for these grants will be up to $150,000 for the first budget period, and up to $250,000 for each of two additional budget periods, subject to availability. (Total of up to $650,000).

Small Business Innovative Research Program

Eligibility: Eligible Applicants: Entities that are, at the time of award, small business concerns as defined by the Small Business Administration (SBA).All technology, science, or engineering firms with strong research capabilities in any of the priority areas listed in this notice are encouraged to participate. Consultative or other arrangements between these firms and universities or other non-profit organizations are permitted, but the small business concern must serve as the grantee. For Phase I projects, at least two-thirds of the research and/or analytic activities must be
performed by the proposing small business concern. Furthermore, the total of all consultant fees, facility leases or usage fees, and other subcontracts or purchase agreements may not exceed one-third of the total funding award.
Description: The purpose of this program is to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector, strengthen the role of small business in meeting Federal research or research and development (R/R&D) needs, increase the commercial application of the U.S. Department of Education (Department) supported research results, and improve the return on investment from federally funded research for economic and social benefits to the Nation. Under this competition USDOE is particularly interested in applications that address one of the following priorities: These priorities are: Each of the following priorities relate to innovative research utilizing new technologies to address the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families. Applicants who choose to respond to one of the invitational priorities must propose projects whose activities contribute to one of the following outcomes: (1) Increased independence of individuals with disabilities in the workplace, recreational settings, or educational settings through the development of technology to support access and promote integration of individuals with disabilities. (2) Enhanced sensory or motor function of individuals with disabilities through the development of technology to support improved functional capacity. (3) Enhanced workforce participation through the development of technology to support access to employment, promote sustained employment, and promote employment advancement for individuals with disabilities.(4) Enhanced community participation and living for individuals with disabilities through the development of accessible information technology including Web access technology, software, and other systems and devices that promote access to information in educational, employment, and community settings, and voting technology that improves access for individuals with disabilities. (5) Improved interventions and increased use of health-care resources through the development of technology to support independent access to health-care services in the community for individuals with disabilities. Applicants should describe the approaches they expect to use to collect empirical evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of the technology they are proposing. Volunteer Management

Nonprofits that do not have a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, other than institutions of higher education, State governments, Private institutions of higher education (The Corporation wants to ensure that all eligible organizations are able to compete on an equal basis for federal financial assistance. Eligible applicants include, but are not limited to nonprofit organizations, including national intermediaries; state commissions on service; volunteer centers; institutions of higher education; national or regional education agencies; educational institutions; faith-based and other community organizations; and private foundations. Applications from organizations not currently receiving Corporation funding as well as from organizations that are now receiving funds under the programs of the Corporation, including AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America, and Senior Corps are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will demonstrate how these grants and the proposed project will have a large-scale scope and leverage significant impact within their organization’s network or amongst a group of collaborating organizations. Organizations that currently operate a Corporation-funded program or are applying for other Corporation funding are eligible applicants.
Description: The purpose of this grant competition is to assist national, regional, and statewide nonprofit organizations in planning for and implementing activities within their networks and communities to: • increase volunteer retention; • expand current use of volunteers by creating new volunteer roles and recruiting the appropriate volunteers to fill them; • improve both the impact of volunteers’ activities and how that impact is measured; and • develop strategies that sustain the impact and results associated with the project after the conclusion of Corporation funding. Examples of the types of activities this grant may support include: • assessing current volunteer use and management practices; • designing competency-based volunteer roles and descriptions; • engaging stakeholders in collaborative planning and implementation processes; • developing new or improved measurement systems to track the impact of volunteers; • conducting recruitment activities or developing strategic partnerships to attract the appropriate volunteers to fill newly created volunteer roles; and • implementing volunteer management practices -- such as screening, orientation, training, and recognition -- to increase retention. Awards & Scholarships
LeTendre Education Fund Scholarship

Funding Amount: There will be a minimum of two $1,000 scholarships awarded annually. The scholarship is a one-time award.
Eligibility: The scholarship funds are available to students who are homeless or who have been homeless during their school attendance, and who have demonstrated average or higher than average achievement. According to federal law, a person is considered homeless who "lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence." This includes people living in shelters, cars, motels, campgrounds, or places not meant for human habitation, as well as children and youth who are living with friends or relatives temporarily because they lack permanent housing. Students who have not reached their 21st birthday by September 21, 2007 are eligible to apply. Applicants may be high school juniors or seniors, students enrolled in a GED or other alternative education program, or recent graduates/GED recipients.
Description: The LeTendre Education Fund provides scholarship assistance for higher education to students who are homeless or have experienced homelessness during their K–12 education career. The scholarship may be used to help defray the costs of college tuition, application fees, books, prep courses, visits to prospective colleges, or other educational expenses.

2007 Accessible America Award Program

Funding Amount: A $25,000 annual award competition for disability-friendly communities.
Eligibility: The program is open to all cities and towns across the United States.
Description: Its purpose is to recognize and promote replication of exemplary practices that communities use to facilitate the comprehensive involvement of citizens with disabilities in community life. Accessible America Competition applicants are asked to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to offering their citizens with disabilities full and equal opportunities to participate in community life, including access to jobs, education, religious worship, voting, transportation, housing, emergency preparedness planning and services, and the entire range of social, recreational, cultural, and sports activities.

Eligibility: The CarMax Foundation’s National Program helps nonprofit organizations that are either national in scope or have a presence in one or more of the company's market areas.
