Resources for Hurricane Relief Conference Call
2nd of a Two-Call Conference Call Series
on Resources for Hurricane Relief
by the U.S. Department of Labor
Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives
Join us on Wednesday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. EST as we conduct
our second conference call on the subject of the Resources
for Hurricane Relief.
This phone call will bring to you two of the biggest volunteer
organizations focusing on coordinating and delivering services
and resources to the victims of victims of Hurricanes Katrina/Rita.
Many faith-based and community organizations (FBCOs) are unaware
of these organizations and the work that they do. National
Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster and Katrina
AID Today are large organizations working to assist other organizations
in better service delivery. Our hope is that this information
will better equip you to do what you are already doing so well-serving
your fellow citizens and helping them reestablish their lives.
The call will last for an hour with the presenters speaking
for about 20-30 minutes, allowing for a half hour for Q & A.
Please note, that we only have 125 lines for this call. Only
the first 125 people to call in will have the opportunity to
participate. Callers can dial in for the call 10 minutes prior
to the 2:00 p.m. start.
We hope you can join us for this call!

Speakers:
Warren Harrity,
Katrina Aid Today (KAT)
KAT received funding from the Federal Emergency Management
Agency which KAT has in turn, sub-granted to nine organizations
to provide case management services. These organizations are
assisting those persons considered among the most vulnerable
who are suffering from the impact of Hurricane Katrina. The
funding is earmarked specifically for Katrina survivors and
who may be elderly, disabled, single head of family households,
pre-disaster impoverished, newly impoverished, and those with
health problems. Individual agencies have outlined a variety
of ways in which they will do outreach ranging from media to
connections with grassroots affiliations with organizations
in areas where agencies are operating. Consortium agencies
are working in some 30 states through out the U.S. utilizing
some 3,000 case managers seeking to assist 100,000 cases (approximately
300,000 people) that have been affected by the storm. Locations
and contact information for each agency in local areas are
in the process of being posted on the Web site www.katrinaaidtoday.org.
Ande Miller,
National Volunteer Organizations Active in Relief (National
VOAD)
National VOAD's members provide a broad range of services from
sheltering, feeding, clothing, communications, clean-up, debris
removal, emotional support, spiritual support, child care,
needs assessment, insuring the most vulnerable among us are
made aware of the services available to them and help with
accessing those services. NVOAD coordinates planning efforts
by many voluntary organizations responding to disaster. Member
organizations provide more effective and less duplication in
service by getting together before disasters strike. Once disasters
occur, NVOAD or an affiliated state VOAD encourages members
and other voluntary agencies to convene on site. This cooperative
effort has proven to be the most effective way for a wide variety
of volunteers and organizations to work together in a crisis.
Katrina has given all our members the opportunity to begin
their work in the immediate aftermath of her devastating blow.
Some of our members provide the support services needed to
allow the other organizations do their work — and many
of our organizations do both. For more information about National
VOAD, please see their Web site, www.nvoad.org.
