The Youth Development Council is
required to develop strategies for approval by the Workforce
Florida Board consistent with its mission in law. Additionally,
the Council is to advise the WFI Board and make recommendations
on implementing programs and expending funds supporting
the Youth Development program. The State Council, appointed
by the Chair of WFI, is required by law to meet at least quarterly
(or at the call of the Council chair or at the direction
of the WFI Board of Directors).
The Youth Development Council is tasked with developing strategies
that expand basic workplace skills and the experience
of young people and first-time working adults throughout
Florida. The Council will formulate a youth workforce
plan, providing a blueprint for agencies and communities
to fit together the vast array of programs and resources
to leverage dollars from state and federal programs.
Another objective of this Council will be to develop,
on behalf of the WFI Board, guidelines for regional Youth
Councils and Youth Development Committees to craft
local programs, develop community partnerships and leverage
community resources.
The Youth Development Council promotes successful entry
into the workforce through education and workplace experience
that leads to self-sufficiency and career advancement.
The components of the strategy include efforts that enlist
business, education and community support for students
to achieve long-term career goals, ensuring that young
people and adults entering the workplace for the first
time have the academic and occupational skills required
to succeed in the workplace.
The Youth Development Council continues to
develop the Youth Zone, located on the Employ
Florida web site.
The Youth Development Council links first-time workers
to available training and education programs. First-time
entrants may include students, displaced homemakers,
older Americans, veterans, persons with disability and/or
welfare recipients as well as youth who are no longer
enrolled in schools. A series of strategies are being
developed to help ensure that new workers are successful
in their careers.
The Youth Development Council also organizes Youth Summits
which provide state and local board members, staff
and other workforce professionals the opportunity to
explore current initiatives, share information on local
strategies and learn about best practices statewide.
The areas of responsibility outlined above are only
a sampling of the areas that the Council may pursue.
Additional areas may also be considered. |
