Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce
is the lead institution for the Employ Florida Banner
Center for Homeland Security and Defense. Backed by a $500,000 grant
from Workforce Florida, Inc., the center is focusing on curriculum
development and training for entry-level and experienced workers
in nuclear power plant, airport, port, highway and rail security.
The center will serve as a statewide resource for public and
private employers in the state’s emerging homeland security
and defense sector.
Its partner institutions are: Central Florida Community
College in Ocala, Florida
Keys Community College in Key West, Okaloosa-Walton
College in Niceville, South Florida Community
College in Avon
Park and Tallahassee Community College.
In its first year, the program is developing curricula related
to federally mandated Incident Command System (ICS) training
as well as leadership management training for security personnel.
In the beginning, it is focusing on skills development, including
crisis response, for nuclear power plant workers as well as
assessing and creating training in conjunction with the Florida
Department of Transportation aimed at improving security of
the state’s borders, ports and transportation systems.
Among the educational and training materials being developed
by the center is a series of virtual reality training videos.
The center will train its first 45 people by June 30, 2007.
Among the industry representatives invited to sit on the Advisory
Council are executives from the Florida Department
of Transportation,
F4W, Inc., Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Federal
Bureau of Investigations, Florida Power & Light Company and Tropicana
Products, Inc.
