Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce is the lead institution for the Employ Florida Banner Center for Homeland Security and Defense. Backed by a $500,000 grant from Workforce Florida, Inc., the center is focusing on curriculum development and training for entry-level and experienced workers in nuclear power plant, airport, port, highway and rail security. The center will serve as a statewide resource for public and private employers in the state’s emerging homeland security and defense sector.

Its partner institutions are: Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Florida Keys Community College in Key West, Okaloosa-Walton College in Niceville, South Florida Community College in Avon Park and Tallahassee Community College.

In its first year, the program is developing curricula related to federally mandated Incident Command System (ICS) training as well as leadership management training for security personnel. In the beginning, it is focusing on skills development, including crisis response, for nuclear power plant workers as well as assessing and creating training in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation aimed at improving security of the state’s borders, ports and transportation systems. Among the educational and training materials being developed by the center is a series of virtual reality training videos. The center will train its first 45 people by June 30, 2007.

Among the industry representatives invited to sit on the Advisory Council are executives from the Florida Department of Transportation, F4W, Inc., Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Federal Bureau of Investigations, Florida Power & Light Company and Tropicana Products, Inc.
