Developing a pipeline of skilled workers and
improving the skills of the current workforce in Florida’s
logistics and distribution industry are the goals of the Employ
Florida Banner Center for Logistics and Distribution. The center
is an initiative of Lake City Community College, Okaloosa-Walton
College in Niceville and the University of
North Florida in
Jacksonville. Lake City Community College is taking the lead
on this program, which was launched with a $500,000 Workforce
Florida, Inc. grant. This Banner Center is based in one of
Florida’s Rural Areas of Critical Economic Concern.
The Employ Florida Banner Center for Logistics and Distribution
plans to purchase a state-of-the-art truck driving simulator
and offer training using it at Lake City Community College.
It
also will create basic skills training for entry-level warehousing
employees. Starting with an enrollment of up to 45 people,
the center will offer classes in technical writing, truck driver
safety and leadership training. Curricula development and training
offerings will expand to address other needs related to areas
such as transportation, warehousing, inventory, material handling
and packaging as identified by industry representatives.
Among the industry representatives invited to sit on the Advisory
Council are executives from Annett Holdings, Family
Dollar,
the Florida Trucking Association, Target and Wal-Mart.
