Backed by a $500,000 grant from Workforce Florida,
Inc., Miami Dade College has launched the Employ
Florida Banner Center for Financial Services aimed at expanding training opportunities
for people employed or seeking a career in banking, finance
and insurance. The Center for Financial Training in
South Florida and the University
of Tampa are educational partners in this
initiative.
The Employ Florida Banner Center for Financial Services at
Miami Dade College is developing timely, new curricula, with
industry input, for training entry-level and experienced workers
in financial services. Short-term, in-demand training is based
on industry standards and credentials and encompasses key skills
for people employed or seeking employment in depository and
non-depository banking, securities and insurance. The Employ
Florida Banner Center serves as a statewide resource for financial
services companies as well as for other educational institutions
wishing to incorporate financial services training into their
programs.
The center is developing and/or updating curricula for three
financial services courses by this summer. In its first year,
the program also seeks to train about 300 people needing entry-level
or advanced training. It will help at least 50 training participants
interested in working in the financial services industry find
jobs. Training is being offered through Miami Dade College
and will be made available to other educational institutions,
including its partner institutions, and financial services
companies. For Employ Florida Banner Center training participants
who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree in a financial
field, the center also is working on agreements with other
institutions to help with such a transition. Additionally,
the center will create a partnership with at least one Florida
high school to assist students interested in pursuing careers
in financial services.
Industry representation on the Advisory Council includes executives
from Bank United, Continental National
Bank, Financial Florida,
State Farm Insurance and Wachovia
Securities.
