Launched with a $1.2 million grant from Workforce Florida, Inc., the Employ Florida Banner Center for Aviation and Aerospace, also known as the Aerospace Resource Center, is located at Cecil Commerce Center in Jacksonville. It is a joint initiative of Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Brevard Community College in Cocoa.

The Aerospace Resource Center’s mission is to craft timely curricula to address technological advances and the changing workforce skills needs of aerospace and aviation businesses; to provide training; to promote economic development in both sectors; and to serve as a go-to center for companies seeking to identify training providers throughout Florida.

In its first year, the center is developing curricula for 10 entry-level and advanced courses in subjects such as composites and aviation sheet metal technology. The new curricula are based on training needs identified by aviation and aerospace businesses through statewide focus groups. The center will train at least 200 workers by June 30, 2007. It also will provide technical assistance to Florida secondary schools interested in developing courses that introduce students to career opportunities in aviation and aerospace and in developing skills needed to succeed in the industry.

Industry representation on the Advisory Council includes executives from DayJet Corporation, Florida Aviation Aerospace Alliance, Lockheed Martin Corporation, NASA, Naval Aviation Depot and New Piper Aircraft.
